His novel Nifft the Lean (1982) is set in the future, yet it is a horrific future. "The Autopsy" uses a similar mix of sf and horror. This story-in which Dr. Carl Winters, a fifty-seven-year-old pathologist, arrives at a mountain town to perform autopsies on the victims of a suspicious mining explosion-is about the business of death; and so be warned that it is in some ways a grim tale.
